Values

Underpinning SHC’s objectives of building high quality housing, creating thriving neighbourhoods, jobs, apprenticeships, training and investing in local businesses are four key values:

  • Investing Locally
We aim to deliver developments that strengthen neighbourhoods and create desirable places to live, while supporting and increasing economic prosperity for the city and the region.

  • Delivering Quality
We want to improve people’s quality of life for generations to come by providing homes - of different types and tenure - with the space and flexibility to meet changing lifestyles.

  • Valuing the Environment
We strive to enhance the natural environment with housing that addresses the climate change challenge and helps residents reduce energy consumption.

  • Championing Inclusivity and Communicating Clearly
We will embrace Sheffield’s diverse population by being as inclusive as possible in all activities. We will communicate openly and honestly whilst always being clear about our purpose and intentions.

Investing Locally

Delivering developments that strengthen neighbourhoods and create desirable places to live, while supporting and increasing economic prosperity for the city and the region. We want development work in the city to create opportunities for local people and one of the best was to do this is through work and training. To this end:

  • Of the many people working on our developments 30% are from the city and local region.

  • The building work has created 684 new jobs

  • There are 64 apprentices now working on the projects

  • We have spent more than £13 million with contractors and suppliers based within the Sheffield City Region

Some of the personal stories behind these statistics can be found in the news section. In addition, local shops and amenities have benefited from new people moving into neighbourhoods and spending locally. People whose lives have been improved by the project tell their stories in the short video below.

Delivering Quality

  • All our house-types meet Nationally Described Space Standards

  • All our homes meet Lifetime Homes or Category 2 access standards.

  • We build homes that exceed minimum light and ceiling height criteria

  • We provide homes that are energy efficient  exceeding minimum building regulations

Valuing The Environment

SHC strives to enhance the natural environment with housing that addresses the climate change challenge and helps residents reduce energy consumption.

We recognise that the environment around us is under pressure from human activity and everything we build contributes to this in a number of ways. We also strongly believe that a high quality external environment and a link to nature has considerable benefits to health and general quality of life.

Our housing developments are designed and delivered with this in mind. Here are some examples of where SHC works to address climate change and enhance the environment:

  • Sustainable Urban Drainage – where possible, SHC developments direct surface water from roads and rooftops away from the city’s drainage systems and into natural drainage channels and basins that create beautiful water features within public areas and parks, while reducing the impact of flooding and enhancing biodiversity.

  • Health - promoting healthy minds and bodies through the provision of accessible, landscaped public spaces within the developments and where possible, providing clear public routes through developments to adjacent parks and open spaces.

  • Low carbon – installing high efficiency boilers to reduce fuel costs and therefore the carbon footprint.  Electric cabling and circuitry pre-installed for future fitting of electric vehicle charging points.

  • As the biggest developer of suburban housing in the city we also are privileged to work in partnership with both Sheffield Hallam and Sheffield University on innovative research projects relating to climate change, the value of green infrastructure and landscape design.

Championing Inclusivity and Communicating Clearly

We embrace Sheffield’s diverse population and try to be as inclusive as possible in all activities. We act with integrity and communicate openly and honestly, always being clear about our purpose and intentions.

We are passionate about providing homes that meet the needs of Sheffield’s residents, regardless of what those needs may be. For this reason, our homes are thoughtfully designed with flexibility in mind. Great care is taken to ensure they meet the present needs of our customers but provide sufficient flexibility to be easily adapted, to meet people’s future needs at different life stages.

The key to this is by following national good practice guidance on making homes accessible for people with different needs and in providing enough living space to accommodate change.
